About This Autumn Leaf Crochet Coaster Pattern

This autumn crochet coaster pattern creates a cozy round coaster with a creamy textured center surrounded by tiny raised leaves in beautiful fall shades of mustard, burnt orange, rust and warm brown.

The design is perfect for autumn coffee tables, Thanksgiving decor, handmade gifts or simply adding a little seasonal warmth beside your favorite mug. The dimensional leaves are added around the outer edge so they stand out beautifully against the neutral center.

Finished Size

The finished coaster measures approximately 14-16 cm / 5.5-6.25 in across, depending on your yarn, hook and tension.

For a smaller mug coaster, use a 3 mm hook. For a larger trivet-style version, use worsted-weight cotton with a 4-4.5 mm hook.

Best yarn choice: Cotton is recommended for coasters because it absorbs moisture well and handles the warmth of mugs better than many synthetic fibers.

Color Palette

For the closest autumn look, use:

  • Cream or warm ivory for the main coaster
  • Golden mustard
  • Pumpkin orange
  • Deep rust
  • Caramel brown

Use the accent colors randomly around the edge rather than following a strict repeating sequence. This makes the leaves look more natural.

Round 1 – Center

Using cream yarn, make a MR.

Ch 2, then work 12 dc into the ring.

Pull the ring closed.

Sl st into the first dc to join.

12 sts.

Round 2

Ch 2.

Work 2 dc in every stitch around.

Join with a sl st.

24 sts.

Round 3

Ch 2.

Repeat around:

1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st.

Join with a sl st.

36 sts.

Round 4

Ch 2.

Repeat:

1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st.

Continue around.

Join with a sl st.

48 sts.

Round 5

Ch 2.

Repeat:

1 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st.

Join with a sl st.

60 sts.

Round 6 – Textured Cream Round

Ch 1.

Work 1 sc in each stitch around.

For extra texture, work every third sc into the back loop only.

Join with a sl st.

Do not fasten off yet.

Keep it flat: Place the coaster on the table after every round. If the edges begin to cup, your tension may be too tight. If the coaster starts to ripple, you may have too many increases.

Decorative Openwork Round

Ch 1.

Repeat around:

sc in next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st.

Join with a sl st.

This subtle openwork section creates the small decorative spaces visible underneath the raised autumn leaves.

Outer Cream Edge

Work one final round in cream.

Ch 1.

Work 1 sc in each sc and 1 sc into each ch-1 space.

Join with a sl st.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Small Autumn Leaf Pattern

The dimensional leaves are crocheted separately and sewn around the outer edge.

Using an autumn accent color:

Ch 6.

Beginning in the second chain from hook:

sl st, sc, hdc, dc, 5 dc in final ch.

Now work down the opposite side of the foundation chain:

dc, hdc, sc, sl st.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Pointed Leaf Variation

For a sharper autumn leaf:

Ch 7.

Beginning in second chain from hook:

Sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr.

Work (tr, ch 2, sl st into second ch, tr) into the final chain.

Continue down the opposite side:

tr, dc, hdc, sc, sl st.

Fasten off.

Three-Leaf Cluster

The reference design uses several groups that resemble tiny clusters of autumn leaves.

Make 3 individual leaves in the same or coordinating color.

Arrange their narrow bases together with the pointed ends facing outward.

Position one leaf in the center and angle the other two slightly to each side.

Using the yarn tails, stitch all three bases together securely.

Suggested Leaf Colors

Make approximately 7-9 leaf clusters around the coaster.

A beautiful arrangement is:

  • 2 mustard clusters
  • 2 burnt-orange clusters
  • 2 rust clusters
  • 2 caramel-brown clusters

You can also mix colors inside a cluster for a more colorful fall effect.

Attach the Leaves

  1. Lay the finished cream coaster flat.
  2. Position the leaf clusters around the outer edge.
  3. Leave small cream sections visible between some clusters.
  4. Rotate each cluster slightly so they do not all face the same direction.
  5. Pin them temporarily if needed.
  6. Use the yarn tails to sew only the base and lower half of each leaf.
  7. Leave the pointed ends slightly raised for a dimensional effect.
Important: Do not sew the entire leaf flat against the coaster. Leaving the upper section free creates the soft raised texture that makes this design special.

Outer Autumn Border

Join mustard, rust or burnt-orange yarn anywhere along the outer edge.

Ch 1.

Work 1 sc evenly around the entire coaster, carefully crocheting behind or between the attached leaves.

At the final stitch, sl st into the first sc.

Fasten off.

This colorful border frames the cream center and visually connects all of the leaf motifs.

Optional Braided-Look Border

For a thicker border similar to the reference:

After completing the sc border, work one round of surface slip stitches directly over the outer edge.

Keep the stitches relaxed and even.

This produces a subtle raised, braided appearance.

Blocking

  1. Lightly dampen the finished coaster.
  2. Place it on a blocking mat or folded towel.
  3. Shape the coaster into a perfect circle.
  4. Smooth the cream center.
  5. Arrange each leaf with the pointed end facing outward.
  6. Pin only where necessary.
  7. Allow it to dry completely.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining yarn ends carefully.

Check the back of the coaster and trim any excess yarn.

Gently lift the tips of the leaves with your fingers after blocking so the dimensional texture remains visible.

Make a Matching Set

For a beautiful handmade fall table set, crochet 4 or 6 matching coasters.

You can make every coaster slightly different by changing the placement of the autumn colors while keeping the same cream center.

Tie the finished stack with natural twine for a simple handmade gift.

Matching Trivet

To create a larger matching trivet, continue increasing the cream circle:

Round 7: 1 dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st – repeat around.

Round 8: 1 dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st – repeat around.

Then add the openwork round, leaves and decorative border in the same way.

The larger version works beautifully beneath a teapot or serving dish.

Alternative Color Ideas

  • Classic fall: cream, pumpkin, mustard, rust and brown
  • Farmhouse: ivory, sage, camel and terracotta
  • Thanksgiving: cream, burgundy, burnt orange and golden brown
  • Neutral autumn: oatmeal, beige, mocha and caramel
  • Woodland: cream, forest green, rust and mustard

Frequently Asked Questions

100% cotton yarn is an excellent choice because it is absorbent, washable and suitable for everyday drink coasters.

Approximately 20-27 individual small leaves are enough to create 7-9 three-leaf clusters around one coaster.

Yes. The cream circle and colored outer border can be used alone for a simpler fall coaster.

Curling usually means the tension is too tight or there are too few increases. Blocking can correct mild curling, but significant cupping usually requires adjusting the previous round.

If you use washable cotton yarn, gently hand wash it in cool water, reshape it while damp and allow it to dry flat.

Yes. Replace the autumn colors with deep red, forest green and gold, or use cream with small red and green leaf clusters for a holiday version.
