Finished Size

  • Main star: approximately 29-31 cm / 11.5-12 in across
  • Poinsettia: approximately 13 cm / 5 in across
  • Mini trees: approximately 8-10 cm / 3-4 in tall
  • Heart: approximately 7 cm / 2.75 in
  • Overall hanging: approximately 30 × 55 cm / 12 × 22 in
For a sturdy star: Use tightly twisted cotton or cotton-blend yarn and crochet slightly tighter than usual. This helps the star keep its shape when hanging.

Main Crochet Star

Using warm ivory yarn, make a MR.

Round 1

Ch 3, work 9 dc into MR. Join with sl st. (10 dc)

Round 2

Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (20 dc)

Round 3

Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next st.

*2 dc in next st, dc in next st.*

Repeat around. Join. (30 dc)

Round 4

Ch 1, sc in same st and next 2 sts.

*Ch 8, starting in 2nd ch from hook work: sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc. Skip 3 sts on circle, sc in next 3 sts.*

Repeat until 5 points have been formed.

Building the Star Points

Each star point is enlarged separately.

Point Row 1

Join ivory yarn at the base of one point.

Ch 1, sc across the first side, work 3 sc into the tip, then sc down the opposite side.

Point Row 2

Ch 2, hdc across.

Work 3 hdc into the center tip stitch.

Hdc down the opposite side.

Point Row 3

Ch 3, dc across to tip.

Work (dc, tr, dc) into the tip stitch.

Dc down the second side.

FO.

Repeat for all five points.

Shape check: Lay the star flat after completing every point. All five points should be approximately the same length before adding the border.

Red Star Border

Join deep red yarn at the bottom valley between two star points.

Border Round

Ch 1.

Sc evenly around the entire star.

At each star tip work:

(sc, ch 1, sc)

At each inner valley, work one sc decrease over the two nearest stitches.

Join with sl st and FO.

Crochet Poinsettia

The large red poinsettia is made from five dimensional petals.

Using red yarn, make a MR.

Center

Work 10 sc into MR. Join.

Petal

*Sl st in next st, ch 9.

Starting in 2nd ch from hook:

sc, hdc, dc, 3 tr, dc, hdc.

Sl st into the next stitch of the center.*

Repeat until you have 5 large petals.

Poinsettia Petal Definition

Join red yarn near the base of one petal.

Surface crochet a line of sl sts from the base toward the tip.

This creates the raised central vein visible on each petal.

Repeat for all five petals.

Shape each petal gently with your fingers.

Poinsettia Center

Using ivory yarn, make 6 small crochet berries.

For each berry:

MR, 6 sc into ring, pull tightly closed and FO.

Sew the six berries together in a small cluster.

Attach securely to the center of the red flower.

Green Leaves

Make 5-6 leaves.

Using forest green yarn:

Ch 10.

Starting in 2nd ch from hook:

sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc.

Work (sc, ch 2, sc) into the final chain.

Continue along the opposite side:

sc, hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, sc.

Join and FO.

Pin the leaves behind the poinsettia so their pointed ends remain visible.

Dimensional flower: Do not sew every inch of the petals flat. Secure mainly around the center and lower sections so the petals remain slightly raised.

Mini Crochet Christmas Trees

Make 2 trees using forest green yarn.

Row 1

Ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Turn.

Row 2

Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (4)

Row 3

Ch 1, sc across. Turn.

Row 4

Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc across to last st, 2 sc in last st.

Continue increasing at both ends every second row until the triangle measures approximately 7 cm.

Tree Branch Texture

Working from the bottom upward, add short scalloped branch rows across the front of the triangle.

*Sl st, ch 3, dc in same area, sl st approximately 1 cm away.*

Repeat across.

Make several staggered rows, decreasing the width as you approach the top.

Tree Trunk

Using brown yarn, ch 5.

Sc in 2nd ch and across.

FO and sew vertically behind the bottom center of the tree.

Small Crochet Heart

Using red yarn:

Round 1

MR.

Into MR work:

Ch 2, 3 tr, 3 dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tr, ch 2, sl st.

Pull ring closed.

Round 2

Sc around the heart, working extra stitches around both upper curves and (sc, ch 1, sc) into the bottom point.

FO.

Optional Padded Heart

Make two identical hearts.

Place them together and sc around the edges.

Before closing completely, add a very small amount of fiberfill.

Finish the seam and FO.

Hanging Cords

Cut five lengths of ivory yarn approximately 35-45 cm long.

For stronger cords, either:

  • Use two strands together and make chains, or
  • Make crochet Romanian cords.

Attach the cords evenly across the lower portion of the star.

Wooden Beads & Bells

Thread wooden beads onto the hanging cords before attaching the ornaments.

Suggested arrangement:

  • Far left: wooden bead + gold bell
  • Left center: beads + green tree + gold bell
  • Center: beads + red heart + gold bell
  • Right center: beads + green tree + gold bell
  • Far right: wooden bead + gold bell

Secure every bell firmly with several knots.

Balanced hanging: Before permanently knotting the cords, hang the star vertically and adjust their lengths until the trees, heart and bells create a gentle staggered arrangement.

Top Hanging Loop

Using red ribbon, create a loop approximately 15-18 cm long.

Sew or tie it securely behind the upper point of the star.

The loop should be strong enough to support the completed decoration.

Christmas Bow

Use approximately 70-90 cm of wide red satin or velvet ribbon.

  1. Create two large loops.
  2. Cross them at the center.
  3. Secure tightly with thread or thin floral wire.
  4. Leave two long ribbon tails.
  5. Cut the ends into neat V shapes.

Position the bow just above the top point of the star.

Evergreen & Berry Decoration

Arrange several small evergreen sprigs behind the red bow.

Add red berry stems so they extend slightly to both sides.

Keep the arrangement symmetrical but natural.

Secure the greenery with floral wire or strong thread before attaching the bow.

All-crochet version: Instead of artificial greenery, crochet several long green leaves and small red berries using the same techniques used for the poinsettia.

Assembly

  1. Block the large crochet star and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Position the green leaves in the center.
  3. Place the red poinsettia over the leaves.
  4. Sew the flower securely through several layers of the star.
  5. Attach the five hanging cords along the lower edges.
  6. Add wooden beads.
  7. Attach the two mini trees.
  8. Attach the red heart in the center.
  9. Add the five gold bells.
  10. Secure the top hanging loop.
  11. Add evergreen sprigs and berries behind the top point.
  12. Attach the large red bow last.

Optional Stiffening

If your star bends when hanging, lightly stiffen it.

Mix equal parts white craft glue and water.

Apply a very thin layer to the back of the star only.

Pin the star flat in its correct shape and allow it to dry completely.

Alternatively, sew a piece of plastic canvas behind the star for removable support.

Important: Keep stiffener away from the poinsettia and raised crochet details so they remain soft and dimensional.

Color Variations

  • Traditional: ivory + Christmas red + forest green
  • Vintage: antique cream + burgundy + olive
  • Nordic: white + deep red + natural wood
  • Elegant: ivory + champagne + dark green
  • Winter: white + icy blue + silver
  • Rustic: oatmeal + cranberry + sage

Finishing

  1. Weave in all visible yarn tails.
  2. Check every ornament attachment.
  3. Shape the five star points.
  4. Arrange the poinsettia petals and leaves.
  5. Straighten the hanging cords.
  6. Position the mini trees so they face forward.
  7. Fluff the bow.
  8. Adjust the evergreen branches and berries.
  9. Check that all bells are securely attached.
